About Student Medical Services

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo's Student Medical Services (SMS) is located in Campus Center Room 212 above Campus Center Dining Hall. Office staff are available during business hours Monday-Friday, from 8am-12pm, and from 1pm - 4pm. Student Medical Services is closed for lunch 12-1pm and closed Saturdays, Sundays, and State holidays.

Students can call our office to make an appointment, please be advised we do not make appointments via email and/or discuss private medical information via email.

Please do not mail in , email or file drop any health clearances to our office . We cannot process the health clearances. All health clearances should be submitted to Med+Proctor as soon as possible to avoid delay in registration and attendance. Call at (808) 932-7369 or at (808) 932-7364.

Health Clearance Requirements

TIP: If you are getting an error message when trying to upload to Med+Proctor make sure you are using this link to sign in UH Hilo Health Requirements Page.

Med+Proctor process:

1. Here is the SSO link from the UH Website. Best thing to do is bookmark that page!
2. Students will receive a message once they've uploaded the documents that their documents have been received and are pending review.
3. Review time is typical 24-48 hours but could be longer
4. Students receive an email once they are verified.
5. If you do not receive an email that you are verified and have outstanding requirements, you can log into your account and view them.
6. You will receive weekly emails letting you know you are non-compliant and need to log into your account to view your missing requirements.

Please use the chat feature in Med+Proctor to discuss any issues, UH Hilo Student Medical Services cannot process the health clearances

• Personal Information Missing: Means your name is not on the document you uploaded. Your name and birthdate need to be on the documents and visible
• Date Missing: Date of information provided needs to have month, day, year.
• Missing Vaccine Requirement: Health requirement is either missing or unacceptable. Timing of the vaccines submitted should be the same as UH system health clearances forms must be met for the health clearance to be acceptable

It is best to complete any health requirements you can as soon as possible and to use the UH System Health Clearance form (PDF) when completing the health requirements. This will assure that your medical provider is documenting the correct clearances and/or administering the correct health clearances needed.

Telehealth Appointments

All Telehealth appointments require the completion of the Telehealth Informed Consent (PDF) and sent before your appointment using UH File Drop to recipient: uhhsms@hawaii.edu, Fax: (808) 932-7368, or mail to UH Hilo Student Medical Services 200 W. Hilo Medical Center, located about four miles from campus, provides 24-hour emergency care.

Holiday Closures

Our office will be closed in observance of the following holidays:

TB Clearance and Immunization Clinic

• TB risk assessment screenings are free.
• However if a TB skin test is needed please see the out of pocket cost below.
• TB skin test is $13.
• Two-step TB skin test is $26.
• Feel free to call our office to discuss the two-step process.

Also, the Dept. of Health provides free TB screening. Call the Dept. of Health at (808) 974-6025 to schedule an appointment.

Family Planning Health Care

Our Nurse Practitioner, DR. Heather Hirata , DNP, MSN, BSN, APRN-Rx, FNP-BC, is available for Family Planning healthcare.

The Family Planning Health Clinic, located within the Student Medical Services office, offers pelvic exams, Pap smears, pregnancy testing, testing and treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases and urinary tract infections, contraception (birth control pills, Depo-Provera® shot, Ortho Evra patch, or free condoms), and the morning-after pill (must be taken within 5 days after unprotected intercourse), and counseling for the development of reproductive life plans.

Services for males include exams, STD testing and treatment, free condoms, and counseling for the development of reproductive life plans.

HIV/Hepatitis C Testing

• Free, confidential, HIV and Hepatitis C testing is conducted by Kumukahi Health & Wellness, testing is done on-campus every last Monday of the Month from 12pm-4pm in CC-306, or at the Kumukahi offices - To schedule an appointment call (808) 982-8800 or schedule a test .

• Free HIV, STD, Hepatitis B & C testing also available at Waiakea Health Center - (808) 974-4247

Student Insurance

All students are strongly encouraged to purchase medical insurance. A University of Hawaiʻi endorsed student health insurance plan is available for regular registered students taking six or more credits. The Student Health Insurance information and application is available online at HMSA's student portal or call HMSA at 1 (800) 620-4672. You may also pickup a brochure in the Student Medical Services office. International students on non-immigrant visas must have proof of health insurance and present such proof to the international student advisor prior for registration.

All medical records at the SMS are strictly confidential and will not be released to anyone without your consent. You may view or print our Patient Rights and Responsibilities & Notice of Privacy Practices.
